Aster Data Access

Data Access for the General Public

The Land Process (LP) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) currently provides the general public access to the following ASTER data products at no charge.

  • ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (DEM).
  • ASTER L1B: Registered Radiance at the Sensor V003.(Only for the U.S. and territories).

You may Search, Browse and Order either product through the Warehouse Inventory Search Tool (WIST). The ASTER L1B rolling archive is also available through the LP DAAC Data Pool, and The Global Visualization Viewer (GloVis).

The following global data archive is available at the LP DAAC for Search and Browse only.

  • ASTER L1A: Reconstructed Unprocessed Instrument V003. This product may be accessed through WIST.

ALL ASTER data products (L1A, L1B, and Higher Level) are also available for search, browse and order (at a charge) to the general public through Japan's Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC) WWW IMS interface: http://imsweb.aster.ersdac.or.jp/ims/html/MainMenu/MainMenu.html

Data Access for NASA Approved Users

Approved NASA-supported researchers and their affiliates, as well as approved educational users, may order all ASTER data products directly from the LP DAAC at no charge. All approved users must create an Earth Observing System (EOS) Clearinghouse (ECHO) account to search, browse, and order LP DAAC ASTER data through the Warehouse Inventory Search Tool (WIST) or Global Visualization Viewer (GloVis). To process the ECHO account, follow the steps below:

  1. Create an ECHO account.
  2. Submit the application form for access to ASTER ordering privileges.

ASTER Data Policies

ASTER Redistribution Policies for the General Public

Users of ASTER Global DEM Data Received from the LP DAAC

ASTER Global DEM (GDEM) data are subject to redistribution and citation policies. Before ordering ASTER GDEM data, users must agree to redistribute data products only to individuals within their organizations or projects of intended use, or in response to disasters in support of the GEO Disaster Theme. When presenting or publishing ASTER GDEM data, users are required to include a citation stating, "ASTER GDEM is a product of METI and NASA."

Because there are known inaccuracies and artifacts in the data set, please use the product with awareness of its limitations. The data are provided "as is" and neither NASA nor METI/ERSDAC will be responsible for any damages resulting from use of the data.

ASTER Redistribution Policies for Approved Users

NASA-affiliated and Educational Users of ASTER Data Received from the LP DAAC

NASA-supported researchers, their affiliates, and educational users who obtained data through the NASA agreement at no cost must abide by the following data restriction policies. Researchers and educators may only redistribute these data to other researchers and educators; they may not redistribute data to the public or others not fitting the criteria stated above. Users who do not comply with this policy will lose their privilege to obtain any additional ASTER data as a NASA-affiliated user.

Federal Partners of ASTER Data Purchased from LP DAAC

ASTER data and products purchased through the LP DAAC have no restrictions on subsequent use, sale, or redistribution, regardless of the purchase date.

Federal Partners are required to contact LP DAAC User Services for information about pricing and available payment options.

Product Return Policy

Customers may return unsatisfactory products* for exchange or refund within 60 days of their order's shipment date. When returning a product, customers must include a copy of the shipping summary and a detailed letter describing the reason for their product return. Customers may direct questions regarding this procedure to LP DAAC User Services.

*Unsatisfactory products are those that are mistakenly provided by the LP DAAC or unusable because of defects that are the fault of the LP DAAC.

Data Citation Policy

In the event that data distributed from the Land Processes DAAC are incorporated into your research, please supply the following acknowledgment within your published work: "These data are distributed by the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC), located at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (lpdaac.usgs.gov)." If possible, please e-mail or send us reprints/citations of papers or oral presentations based on data obtained from the LP DAAC (see below for mailing address and e-mail address). This will help us to stay informed of how the data are being used.

When presenting or publishing ASTER Global DEM data, users agree to include a citation stating that "ASTER GDEM is a product of METI and NASA."
