Troubleshooting ArcGIS Server installation and Post installation
Troubleshooting ArcGIS Server installation and Post installation

The following troubleshooting tips can help resolve some common ArcGIS Server installation issues. For additional help, see the ESRI Knowledge Base at http://support.esri.com.

When I launch the setup, I receive a prompt that states "ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services requires .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1." or "ArcGIS Server 10 - Web Applications requires .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1."

ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework (ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services and ArcGIS 10 - Web Applications setups) requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. If the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is not installed, the ArcGIS for the Microsoft .NET Framework installation process will not proceed. Install the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1, then double-click the Setup.exe for ArcGIS Server 10 - GIS Services or ArcGIS Server10 - Web Applications.

I see a dialog box indicating setup features are unavailable due to missing dependencies.

See Feature dependencies to determine which dependencies your machine is missing.

The Services Manager feature is unavailable due to missing dependencies even though IIS is installed. I am installing on Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008/R2.

Specific IIS components are required for ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework installations on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008/R2. For installations on Windows Vista and Windows 7, see Vista/Windows 7 IIS requirements. How do I create a log of the installation?

The example below creates a log the installation at C:\. However, the log can be created anywhere on the local machine.

msiexec /I <path to ArcGIS Server media>\setup.msi /L*V C:\ArcGIS_Server.log
NoteNote:

The Windows Installer requires the System account to have full control of the System drive and the target drive.

Are setup log files created?

Yes. Setup log files are generated in the root user's home directory. The two setup log files generated during installation are, ArcGISServer_InstallLog.log and ArcGISServer_InstalledFeatures.log.

How do I start/stop/restart ArcGIS Server?

After a successful installation, the ArcGIS Server processes should be running. In order to stop all SOM and/or SOC processes, run <ArcGIS Server Install Location>/arcgis/scripts/stopserver as the ArcGIS Server user. To start ArcGIS Server, run <ArcGIS Server Install Location>/arcgis/scripts/startserver as the ArcGIS Server user. ArcGIS Server will also start automatically when the machine is rebooted.

Note: When stopping and immediately restarting ArcGIS Server, allow 25-30 seconds after stopping the server before running the startserver script. This will ensure that all the processes are properly shutdown before restarting.

How do I connect to ArcGIS Server Manager?

Once the installation has completed successfully, you will be able to access ArcGIS Server Manager from Firefox or any supported Web browser by navigating to http://<SOM machine name>:8099. To access Manager for the first time, log in with the user name admin and the password admin. See the ArcGIS Server Manager documentation and help for more information.

I can't connect to the GIS Server from ArcCatalog.

Make sure that you are logged onto your machine as (and are running ArcCatalog as) a user account that has been added to the ArcGIS Server Manager. Note: You can use the "run as" command to start ArcCatalog as a different user than the user you are logged onto your machine as.

In ArcCatalog, I added my ArcGIS Server but I don't have the option to Add Server Object.

If the option to Add Server Object is unavailable, make sure the user you are logged onto your machine as (and are therefore opening ArcCatalog as) is a user that has been added to the ArcGIS Server Manager.

I received the following error message when adding a server object:

"GxAGSU. Machine <machine name> is not a valid server container. Error: (-8013) AL_SYSGEN_DIRECTORY_DOES_NOT_EXIST"

This error message means that you are not authorized to use ArcGIS Server. Each container machine must be registered for use with a valid authorization file. Obtain an authorization file from ESRI Customer Service and then complete the authorization of ArcGIS Server. Authorization of ArcGIS Server can be performed in the initial setup or at a later time by aunching the authorization script from <ArcGIS Server installation location>/arcgis/scripts/authorizeSoftware.

I have added a MapServer, but when I preview it using ArcCatalog, the preview is blank.

This may be a data access error, or an output error. Check the log file to verify that there are no errors indicating that the layers in the map are invalid. If the layers in the map are invalid, then verify that the container account has access to the data that the layers are referencing.

If there are no invalid layers in the log file, this may indicate that the output directory you specified for you MapServer has an invalid virtual directory. To verify this is the case, change the output directory to "None" and preview the MapServer again.

For more information on accessing and reading log files, consult Appendix B, Configuration and Log Files in the ArcGIS Server Administrator and Developer Guide.

When trying to start the Server Object Service, it fails with a login error.

Using your operating system tools, check the Server and Container accounts to verify that their passwords have not expired. If the passwords have expired, or its indicated that their password need to be changed, check the "password never expires" option.

Now that I have installed the GIS Server, where are the ADF components?

For Solaris and Linux, the ADF components for Java are features available to install from the same setup program you installed the GIS Server. The ADF for .NET is included on the ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework, and is only available on Windows. These setups are included in your ArcGIS Server media kit.

The ArcGIS Server post installation setup accepts blank passwords when creating the SOC and SOM accounts, is this intentional?

Blank passwords are accepted, but are not recommended. If the operating system security policy is set to refuse blank passwords, the post installation set up will generate errors.

I can't connect to the GIS Server from ArcCatalog.

Make sure that you are logged onto your machine as (and are running ArcCatalog as) a user account that has been added to the agsusers or agsadmin group on the GIS Server. Note: You can use the "run as" command to start ArcCatalog as a different user than the user you are logged onto your machine as.

I added my account to the appropriate group, but I still can't connect to the GIS Server.

After adding your account to the agsusers and agsadmin user group, you may need to log out of your machine, then log back in again before the new group membership takes effect.

In ArcCatalog, I added my ArcGIS Server but I don't have the option to Add Server Object.

If the option to Add Server Object is unavailable, make sure the user you are logged onto your machine as (and are therefore opening ArcCatalog as) is a user that has been added to the agsadmin group.

I am a member of the agsadmin user group, but I still don't have the option to Add Server Object.

After adding your user account to the agsadmin group, you may need to log out of you machine, then log back in again before the new group membership takes effect.

Obtain an authorization file from ESRI Customer Service and then complete the Authorize ArcGIS Server option of the post installation setup.

The ADF for .NET and Java setup programs are on separate CD's. The Application Developer Framework for .NET and the Application Developer Framework for Java CD's were included in your ArcGIS Server media kit.

While creating a new project using one of the .NET ADF Templates, I receive the following error: "Microsoft Development Environment: Index (zero based) must be greater than or equal to zero and less than the size of the argument list".

You will need to install Internet Information Server (IIS). Check http://support.esri.com for supported versions of IIS. Follow the instructions in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 306005 HOWTO: Repair IIS Mapping After you Remove and Restart IIS. This KB article can be accessed from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q306005

When I debug an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio .NET, I receive the following error message: "Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the Web server. The server does not support debugging of ASP.NET or ATL Server applications. Run setup to install the Visual Studio .NET server components. If setup has been run, verify that a valid URL has been specified. You may also want to refer to the ASP.NET and ATL Server debugging topic in the online documentation. Would you like to disable future attempts to debug ASP.NET pages for this project?"

The solution to this error is documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 318465 PRB:Cannot Debug ASP.NET Web Application. This KB article can be accessed from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;318465

What happens if the machine does not have Visual Studio .NET 2003, but has Visual Studio .NET 2002 and .NET Framework 1.1?

You will see the following in Visual Studio .NET 2002:

  • Toolbox does not have an ESRI tab.

  • The ArcGIS Server Projects folder does not show up in the "Project Types" panel of the "New Project" dialog.

  • Trying to add webcontrols from ESRI.ArcGIS.Server.WebControls.dll, produces the following error message: "There are no components in '<path to>/ESRI.ArcGIS.Server.WebControls.dll' that can be placed on the toolbox."

To solve this issue, perform the following:

  1. Install Visual Studio .NET 2003

  2. Uninstall ArcGIS Server .NET ADF

  3. Reinstall ArcGIS Server .NET ADF

When deploying the ArcGIS Server Java ADF Web templates I receive an error while executing the arcgisant command, <xyz>-deploy (where xyz is one of the supported servlet engines). For example, arcgisant tomcat-deploy.

The path to the Web server or Application Server that you are using in the common.properties file is wrong or missing. open common.properties located in $/developerkit/templates/java, locate the section for your servlet engine and enter a valid path.

When I type arcgisant in the command window I receive a command not found error.

The executable for arcgisant is not in your system path. Refer to the 'How to set up environment variables' section in Step 4 of the Java ADF Installation Guide for instructions on adding arcgisant to your system path.

I could not find the ANT task to deploy the ArcGIS Server Java ADF Web templates to my servlet engine.

The servlet engine may not be supported, or your servlet engine does not support command line deployment of Web applications. The arcgisant build command creates a Web ARchive (WAR) file for your application located in a folder called build. Use this WAR file to deploy the Web application in your servlet engine (refer to your servlet engine documentation for information on deploying a WAR file).

The following troubleshooting tips can help resolve some common ArcGIS Server post installation issues. For additional help, see the ESRI Knowledge Base at http://support.esri.com.

At the GIS Server Post Install Summary, I receive the error "The password does not meet the password policy requirements..."

Determine the complexity needed to satisfy your organization's password policy requirements. If necessary, contact your network administrator. After determining the level of complexity required, run the post installation again and enter passwords that meet your organization's password policy requirements.

I can't connect to the GIS Server from ArcCatalog.

Make sure that you are logged on to your machine as (and are running ArcCatalog as) a user account that has been added to the agsusers or agsadmin group on the GIS Server. Note: You can use the run as command to start ArcCatalog as a different user than the user you are logged onto your machine as.

I added my account to the appropriate group, but I still can't connect to the GIS Server.

After adding your account to the agsusers and agsadmin user group, you may need to log out of your machine, then log back in again before the new group membership takes effect.

In ArcCatalog, I added my ArcGIS Server, but I don't have the option to Add New Service.

If the option to Add New Service is unavailable, make sure the user you are logged on to your machine as (and are therefore opening ArcCatalog as) is a user that has been added to the agsadmin group.

I am a member of the agsadmin user group, but I still don't have the option to Add New Service.

After adding your user account to the agsadmin group, you may need to log out of your machine, then log back in again before the new group membership takes effect.

I have added a Map Service, but when I preview it using ArcCatalog, the preview is blank.

This may be a data access error or an output error. Check the log file to verify that there are no errors indicating that the layers in the map are invalid. If the layers in the map are invalid, then verify that the container account has access to the data that the layers are referencing.

If there are no invalid layers in the log file, this may indicate that the output directory you specified for your Map Service has an invalid virtual directory. To verify that this is the case, change the output directory to None and preview the Map Service again.

For more information on accessing and reading log files, consult the ArcGIS Server Help.

When trying to start the Server Object Manager service, it fails with a login error.

Using your operating system tools, check the Server Object Manager (SOM) and Server Object Container (SOC) accounts to verify that their passwords have not expired. If the passwords have expired, or it's indicated that their passwords need to be changed, check the password never expires option.

The GIS Server post installation won't let me enter my entire Web server machine name.

ArcGIS Server names cannot exceed 15 characters or you will encounter errors during the post installation and when trying to connect to the server. This is a known limit related to a Microsoft specification for Active Directory names.

Does the GIS Server post installation create a log?

Yes, ArcGISServerPostInstallLog.txt can be found in the TEMP folder. The TEMP folder can be accessed by opening Windows Explorer and entering %TEMP% for the address.
